More residents from different nationalities convert to Islam - Khaleej Times As many as 290 residents reverted to Islam at the Islamic Information Centre in September this year. Despite some misconceptions about Islam as an intolerant religion, many people here, from different nationalities, have converted to Islam. As many as 290 residents reverted to Islam at the Islamic Information Centre (IIC) of the Dubai government-run Dar Al Ber Society in September this year. A senior official said the new Muslims originate from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, China, India, Cameroon, Uganda, and many other countries. IIC director Rashid Aljunaibi, said the Centre spares no effort to introduce Islam to non-Muslims in the best, easiest, and most tolerant, and persuasive way possible. “People are attracted to the merciful and rational teachings of Islam which orders its followers to be honest, fair and kind to all people, disregard their religion, race, language and colour.” Further, a unified certificate is now issued to authenticate a new Muslim’s conversion to Islam in association with the Dubai Courts, and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai.” 50-year-old Filipino Manuel, now named Abdullah, said though he was born Christian, he knew nothing about his religion. “When coming to the UAE, seeing how kind Muslims are, I started thinking about Islam, but did not convert to it.” “Reading more about Islam, particularly a copy of the holy Quran translated into Tagalog, I discovered a totally new world I was blind to see, though it was very close to me”. The Centre, located at the 2nd December Road close to Satwa Roundabout in Bur Dubai recently collected a cash donation of Dh51,000 in support to poor new Muslims. Over 20,000 residents, from 200 nationalities, have converted to Islam at the Centre since its inception in 1993. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes
