More than 200 hardcore trail runners are expected to take on the Bell Ringer 50K/25K races at Montgomery Bell State Park this Saturday. Ultrarunners from across the region will be challenged by the 31-plus-mile course through one of Middle Tennessees most picturesque parks with a portion of proceeds to benefit the Friends of Montgomery Bell State Park. Participation is limited to 150 runners in each of the 50-kilometer and 25-kilometer races with the cutoff for signups last week. The race course is described as moderately difficult with multiple uphill and downhill sections as it winds its way through the 3,850-acre park. The races are restricted to series trail runners, with cutoff times at various stages and a 9 1/2-hour limit to finish the 50K, which is 31.0686 miles. Anyone who hasnt reached the seven-mile post in two hours will be asked to drop out, as well as 21 miles in six hours and 27.25 miles in eight hours. The time limit requires an average pace of 17 minutes per mile. There also are a Run Club race for kids with a two-mile trail and a One Mile Fun Run for kids, walkers, strollers and others wanting to participate. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Montgomery Bell State Parks efforts to build a new statue honoring the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built the park during The Great Depression as part of President Franklin Roosevelts New Deal recovery plan. For more information on the Friends of Montgomery Bell State Park or the Bell Ringer 50K/25K, call the park at 615-797-9052 or visit the parks Facebook page.
