More than 75 years ago, a horrific event unknown in modern history was visited upon the Jews of Europe culminating in the organized looting and destruction of Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues in November 1938. It would become known as Kristallnacht – the night of broken glass. Fleeing Nazi Europe, they found most of the world closed to them except for one group of islands in the Pacific called the Philippines. Between 1935 and 1941, the Philippines led by President Manuel L. Quezon, was able to provide safe refuge for more than 1,300 Jews. Today, their descendants number over 8,000 souls. Filipino-American filmmaker Sonny Izon tells us how the Filipino people made a difference then and continue to make a difference now in this documentary that had its world premiere at the Bakersfield Film Festival in California last night.
