Morgans Story---These are pictures of my youngest grandchild, Morgan. She was born July 7 of this year, and by all accounts was a healthy newborn. The only problem we were aware of was a high bilirubin count, for which she underwent light therapy. At 2 weeks old, Morgan had a choking spell that ended with seizure-like activity. Her mom, Arica Johnson called paramedics and she was taken to Childrens Hospital. Once there, the doctors ordered a chest x-ray to make sure there was no obstruction and saw that Morgans heart was enlarged. She underwent several tests, including EKGs and Echocardiograms. Ultimately she was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Morgan takes Lasix every day to prevent fluid build-up on her heart and lungs. She also sees her Cardiologist once a month. Morgans Cardiologist says 1/3 of children with her condition grow out of it, 1/3 remain on medication for life, and 1/3 have to get a heart transplant---its impossible to tell which third she will fall in. Needless to say, we are prayerful that she will be in the 1st third. This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are trusting that God will heal our little angel because He created every part of her. The Childrens Cardiomyopathy Foundation has designated the month of September to raise awareness of cardiomyopathy in children. Only 1child in 100,000 have this condition and unfortunately, sometimes it isnt detected until the child has a fatal heart attack. Please help us raise awareness so other children will be diagnosed before its too late.
