Morning Rant: This just keeps getting better and better. Originally, I was for an immediate American response to the gassing of innocent Syrian men, women and children by President Bashir Assad. Now, I am not so sure if this is really going to accomplish anything. Pres. Hussein stated a couple of weeks ago that Assad “had crossed the red line” in gassing his people. Well, this is true, he did. But since then several things have occurred. If the president was really serious in doing this, he should have responded immediately as possible after this occurred. Now, in light of Parliament in Britain refusing to authorize the British Prime Minister to launch a strike, Hussein has decided to put the burden on Congress to act. Unlike in the case of the Brits, who called Parliament back into session from their summer holiday, Hussein has decided to wait until Congress returns on Sept. 9th. In watching the “talks” today, Sec’ty Kerry believes that Congress will authorize a unilateral strike against Assad’s government. I am not so sure about that. There is a rather large ground swell of opinions of citizens in this country who do not favor becoming involved in the internal civil war of a sovereign nation. On the other hand, American interests in the region are threatened by inaction on the part of the United States, namely Israel, Jordan and Turkey. Syria has threatened to launch attacks against Israel should the U. S. attack. I am sure that Iran is just biting at the chance to do the same. But just whose side are we aiding? The rebel forces in that country are supported by Al Qaeda and the Taliban, whom we have been fighting for years. By attacking, are we in essence becoming allied with forces that we oppose? And, by acting, most likely alone, are we not inviting more terrorists attacks on this country by those elements? By waiting this long and even longer, the president has shown that he is weak, and has handed those forces a “victory” by not backing up his words. With all the time that has and continues to pass, you had better believe that Syria is in the process of burying all of those WMDs under a sand dune somewhere in the middle of the desert. This should be the actions of the United Nations to respond to this tragedy. The Security Council of the UN should be acting on this immediately. The only problem is that any resolution to respond militarily would most likely be shot down by Russia and China, who both sit on the council. Mr. Kerry is dead certain that the Congress will vote to attack. As stated, I am not so sure. One way or another, the president will attack with or without Congressional approval. In order to “save face” to the world and show that he is not a lightweight in the area of international affairs he has to. But I fear that it is now too late to be effective or make any difference. Those in the region will still hate us no matter what we do. It just keeps getting thicker and thicker. Just My opinion!
