Morning doggie lovers, Morning doggie lovers, did you know that dietary FATS are the most concentrated source of energy for the dog. Unlike us humans, dogs do not need to carb load before a big event!! Instead, they rely on fats ! Dogs love fat and they find it easily digestible. It helps keep their energy levels stable and this is particularly so for working or very active dogs. In fact, those dogs competing in endurance sports (think sled dogs!!) can need from 50-70% of their diet coming from fat!!! When feeding fats, remember: Choose a variety of fats from fresh food sources such as animal fat, tinned fish, eggs along with fish or salmon oil in supplement form If you are trying to help your dog lose weight, dont reduce the fat, but rather focus on the carbohydrate and overall amount you are feeding. (Remember dogs require fats for many metabolic processes in their bodies). Of course, the right types of fats are important too! If you dog appears to be reacting to fat (maybe loose or mucousy stools), you may need to reduce the amount of fat or overall food intake. Of course, not digesting fat properly (loose, light coloured and mucous covered stools along with foul smell and dehydration) can be as simple as not tolerating certain fats such as those cooked or processed, to more serious conditions such as liver disease, pancreatitis, diabetes and cushings disease. So always seek your vets advice if the problem does not resolve by dietary changes. Oh, and by the way, Lipomas and other fatty tumors are not caused by your dog eating fats, but rather the body’s way of ridding itself of toxins and other unwanted material but, because the body is out of balance, it can’t eliminate toxins through normal channels such as the kidneys, liver or intestines. When the endocrine and immune systems are not functioning at full capacity, the body does the next best thing and tries to encapsulate any unwanted material and eliminate it through the largest excretory organ of the body: the skin. Lipomas and other fatty tumors are like a lump of dirt that you would sweep under the rug when you don’t know what else to do with it!!!
