Morrisons Employee Arrested Over Supermarket Data Theft The Independent (United Kingdom) (03/17/14) Tadeo, Maria West Yorkshire, U.K., police confirmed that an employee at the supermarket chain Morrisons was arrested in connection with the alleged theft of payroll data. Detective Chief Inspector Gary Hooks stated that the employee was arrested on suspicion of making or supplying an article for use in fraud. According to Morrisons, the data theft affected staff from all levels of the company, including the board, but no information was provided as to how many of the companys 130,000 staff members were impacted or whether chief executive Dalton Philips was one of those whose information was stolen. The stolen data, which was later published online, includes the bank account information of thousands of Morrisons staff members. The information was immediately taken down after the breach was discovered on March 13, and employees were notified of the theft by managers. Morrisons is working with Experian to detect misuse of the information and is in the process of reviewing its internal data security measures. The company issued a statement saying that no customer data was stolen and that none of its staff would be left financially disadvantaged.
