Morsi supporters stage demo in capital Supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi have staged a demonstration in a district of the capital. On Tuesday, scores of pro-Morsi protesters gathered in front of the Rabiah al-Adawiyah mosque in Nasr City located to the east of Cairo. The demonstrators held mass prayers and condemned the Egyptian army’s use of live ammunition against the protesters. Earlier in the day, a coalition of Egypt’s Islamic groups told EU Foreign Policy chief Catherine Ashton that the Egyptian people would continue protests until the toppled president is reinstated. On July 3, army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced that Morsi was no longer in office and declared that the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, had been appointed as the new interim president of Egypt. The army also suspended the constitution. Army officials said Morsi, who took office in June 2012, was being held “preventively” by the military. On July 5, Muslim Brotherhood supreme leader Mohammed Badie said the coup against Morsi was illegal and millions would remain on the street until he is reinstated as president. On July 27, at least 150 people were killed and scores of others injured in clashes during rival demonstrations by supporters and opponents of Morsi across the country.
