Morticia- Looking through these photos you may not notice anything unusual, they simply look like old photos.....but keep reading.... Victorian Post-Mortem Photography For those who could not afford to have a painted portrait commissioned there came something new....the invention of the daguerreotype (a photograph taken by an early photographic process). This provided the middle class with a way to remember their deceased loved ones. In some cases it would be the only family photo they had. Some of the deceased were posed upright using a stand, some with their eyes propped open, many with their eyes closed to give the impression of them sleeping and there were many other ways to make them look more life-like. A quick explanation of some of the photos: Picture 1: Deceased man and instrument used to prop him up. Picture 2 & 3: If you look in the red circle (picture 2) you can see part of the stand used for propping up the deceased (also behind the boy in picture 3). Youll notice more stands if you look closely at the photos.
