Moses. Joshua. David. These venerable leaders of antiquity didnt need to rely on a military superpower across the sea to guarantee the security of their people. Their Superpower was far more stable and reliable. And somehow conspicuously absent from the discussion these days. This chicken and argument is wearing thin. The origins of the conflict are older than living memory, involving shadowy actions by forgotten ancestors. Who started it? Who cares? The question is usually raised rhetorically, by those who already have their answer, and are just using it to justify more vengeful brutality. Who started it? Who cares? It doesnt matter. What matters is that its got to STOP. The Norwegian national anthem, «Ja, vi elsker dette landet,» is usually sung with three verses. There are, however, five more, relating significant events in Norse history. One of them, in particular, tells about the conflict between the Scandinavian nations, and how it came to an end. Its really quite remarkable (with my paraphrase in English): “Fienden sitt våpen kastet, opp visiret for, vi med undren mot ham hastet, Ti han var vår bror.” “The enemy cast down his weapon and removed his helmet. In wonder we recognized him as our brother.” The Scandinavian peoples got over their hostilities, and their languages are close enough to be mutually intelligible. Linguistically, Arabic and Hebrew are cousins. “Salaam,” “Shalom.” Both mean peace. At least they have the word. Thats a beginning.
