When two black hole galaxies merge, one black hole typically becomes active - that is, material drawn toward the black gets hot and emits large amounts of radiation. However, it is rarely the case that both black holes become active. Those findings come from a new infrared study of 29 merging pairs of galaxies conducted by Japans Subaru telescope on Hawaii.
