Most governments have official who become facilitators when the risk is low and the chance of benefit is high enough. ElephantVoices During the CITES meeting held in Doha in 2010 Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Sam Wasser and #ElephantVoices’ Joyce Poole gave a detailed arguments about why Tanzania should not be permitted to down list and trade in ivory. Tz’s application for down listing elephants (read: sell ivory) was turned down. Tanzania’s representatives were furious - and Joyce had to promise to keep quiet to be allowed into Tanzania for a meeting in Arusha two years later. Later the inconvenient truth has been admitted even by the Tz authorities - tens of thousands of the Selous elephants have been slaughtered in recent years. And now this. It is almost unbelievable to hear and see what took place during an official visit by the Chinese Premiere in 2013, documented by our colleagues at the Environmental Investigation Agency (Washington, DC), EIA. Unfortunately, it is not totally surprising. You should watch this video vimeo/111022507, and please share. We continue to urge the Chinese Government to act now to save the future of elephants, and, as a huge investor in Africa, start building a better image. It is much needed
