Most horror films are made for people who have never really been scared in their lives, and those films arent worth watching. To understand a good horror film, you have to have once in your life wondered when youll eat again, you have been shot at, or you must have once considered murder as the only path to freedom. To be scared, you must have once been scared. The Babadook is an Australian horror film that doesnt show us whats scary, it reminds us of the scary things weve already known in our lives, the slow-moving shadow of horror, relentless, with no help coming, and a gradual awareness that theres no defeating it, only a hope that we can live with it every day.
