Most importantly is what they and we do with the ball. Every single action or stillness that is a part of winning a tennis match, has to do with the ball. The ball is the conduit through which the match is won. It has been commonly said “Your opponent is 2 oz. and covered with fuzz”. You play the ball that comes from the opponent, period. So how does your new capacity facilitate doing more, better or less with the ball at the right time. The ball is not simply something to hit, it’s the mode of attack and being attacked. The ball is what coaxes an error or a weak shot in return, requires a player to do something that they are unable to do. Master Tennis Professional Ken DeHart has often been heard to say “Every ball is a question. When the ball comes it asks you ‘can you hit me back’? How about now? Can you hit me back the way you want to hit me?’. Knowing that Ken is one of the top students of the game that there has ever been, it would not surprise me to learn that is quoting someone there.
