Most mothers are worried about having a big baby (classified as >4000g and called macrosomic). Longer labours are more common, perineal tears are often larger, caesarean rates are higher and vacuum/forceps are used more commonly with bigger babies. A study released last month in the Australian Journal of Obstetrics / Gynaecology shows that only ONE THIRD (33%) of big babies are picked up by ultrasound in the 2 weeks prior to birth. Of those bigger babies 53% deliver vaginally and 47% by caesarean. Ultrasound is not as accurate as we would like to think.... onlinelibrary.wiley/doi/10.1111/ajo.12214/full
