Most notable deaths in the Las Vegas Weekly for 2014 included Jackie (John Davis) Gaughan. I didnt think that tiny article quite did him justice. My mother knew him better than I did, and she would vouch for him. He was a good man, who did alot for the people... He kept the Western casino open for years. For a very long time, even after the place stopped turning a profit, the drinks were always cheap, and the employees had a place to work. He drove an old pickup, even after he got rich (because thats the kind of guy he was...). He was the only rich man I ever knew that couldnt stand other pretentious rich people. He loved the poor. He would play cards with them on the weekends, at his home (the El Cortez casino) which he rarely ever left for the last few decades of his life. I was allowed to attend his funeral. Services were held on St. Patrick’s Day at St. Viator’s Catholic Church at Flamingo and Eastern Avenue. You were a good man Mr Gaughan. You will be missed...
