Most of the time people are not thinking about the valves used in their home, they may never shut the water off at any fixtures so why should they? One reason to think about them is to be assured that they will work when you need them. The valves I want to focus on today are angle stop valves. These are the little valves found under your sinks and toilets. Usually they are chrome coated brass and many have plastic components inside. If you notice alot of corosion around the valves this may indicate that a small leak was present, you should proceed with caution, and have a professional change the valve and supply line. If everything looks clean try to turn the valve off. If the handle seems spongy and will not turn it is most likely going to snap and it should be replaced. If the handle turns easy and you are able to shut the valve off, exercise it a few times before leaving it back on. If you need to turn the handle multiple times you know that your valve is of the common more inferior style. The best valves to use are quarter turn ball valves, they may look like regular angle stops but turning them on and off only requires 1/4 of a total rotation. It is always a great idea to have all your angle stops changed to the quarter turn style in order to be assured that you can isolate fixtures if needed.
