Most of us have that ONE outstanding classmate that we remember most because of their prodigious achievements at such a young age that left everyone else far behind, in the dust and admiring from a great distance. Mine was this guy by the name Charles Cheah who hailed from Ipoh! We both did A-Levels together at then Sunway College. He was always at the top in ALL subjects. I just made sure the other end was covered, so you can imagine where I stood in class rankings ;) His add math was so good, he often challenged the math teacher and turn up right. He even memorised (or had photographic memory) almost the entire red logarithm book. So while the rest of us were busy looking up for the tally, he already had the answers at the tip of his fingers. And you would think that surely he must be bespectacled and square. On the contrary, Charles was pretty good with friends, and he was quite good with the ladies too, judging from the many interests he had then. But it didnt stop there. He was friggin good at ping-pong also. We didnt know how good, but one day, one of our classmates, who was an ex Indian youth table-tennis champion, challenged Charles to a few games. Charles won almost every game. And we thought that was pretty much the extend of his amazing skills and genius, a few classmates who were ex-state badminton players then challenged him to badminton singles. The result: the ex-Terengganu and Sabah under 16 players lost to Charles in singles badminton also!!! Today, as I understand it, Charles is a professor or associate professor in NUS or Nanyang Tech, Singapore... I really wonder though, what else have we not known of this man and his amazing array of talents...
