Most of you know about my friend, David, my 85 year old confidant, - TopicsExpress

Most of you know about my friend, David, my 85 year old confidant, neighbor, and buddy with more zingers than a stand up comic. I got up this morning (as Ive been doing regularly now) and went for a morning walk/run. (More walk than run, these days) and thought back to one of the darkest periods of my life. I was living with him and his wonderful wife, Ann. I had just gone through a sleepless night of worry and anger about so many things gone wrong. David knew I was going to be up and heading to work soon, he and Ann knew things werent good, and he caringly cracked eggs and made an omelet for me, as was my routine in those days. I came upstairs, and I was in a horrible, sour, depressed mood. He said good morning, and I snapped at him in return. Without missing a beat he put one hand on his hip, got an indignant look on his face and said, They should have killed you at birth and sold the milk. And then he laughed out loud. It took me two days to realize how extremely funny that was in that dark moment, but when I reflect on it now, I can only laugh heartily and sometimes until tears come to my eyes realizing that in our darkest moments that humor might well be our salvation. And Im grateful to David every day that he makes me laugh, that he is my friend and neighbor. Its not easy being 85, forgetful, needing someone to haul you around town to get things done, but I can tell you that he is a perpetual joy for me to be with. He paid it forward to me more than I could ever in return. And I hope that if you make it to the end of this little diatribe that youll be able to find a bit of humor in your darkest moments. They are healing moments.
