Why prevent students from having free college education? Because - TopicsExpress

Why prevent students from having free college education? Because the reactionary economists would argue, the end of college education will not be enjoyed by everyone but by the person educated. In short, free college education is a private concern and not a responsibility of the state. But what if we argue that education is intrinsically good, is valuable in itself, in that being educated, other things being equal, enhances the possibility of appreciating and engaging in a wide range of activities, which are fulfilling for their own sake. An educated population promotes economic growth, but it is also more likely to promote more tolerant social arrangements, characterized by different views of what constitutes a worthwhile life, thus indirectly contributing to the actual well-being of all individuals. Are these reasons not sufficient to provide free college education for UP students?
