Most waterman communities on the Chesapeake Bay had blacksmiths - TopicsExpress

Most waterman communities on the Chesapeake Bay had blacksmiths that built rigging for boats, dredges, and tongs. As the industry changed, the businesses that supported watermen had to adapt. Demand for welding work decreased, and larger shops turned into one or two man backyard/garage shops. Aldon Lednum of Tilghman Island, is known throughout Maryland and Virginia as one of the best dredge makers on the bay. His dredges are used throughout Maryland and Virginia for oystering. I spent an afternoon with Aldon this fall and photographed the dredge making process from start to finish. jayflemingphotography
