Most women named in AVOs in domestic situations were wrongly branded as perpetrators, according to figures that expose inadequacies in the police response to violence in the home. Campaigners have asked for trained victims advocates to be installed in every police station to attend incidents amid revelations that the primary barrier to reporting is the belief police do not understand or are not proactive in handling domestic violence.
