Mother, child drown inJhelum By SHAH. Published: Sun, 09 June 2013 12:38 AM BARAMULLA: A mother and child were drowned on Saturday in theriver Jhelum in the Sopore area ofthe north Kashmir district of Baramulla, even as a baby was rescued in a separate incident, official sources said. In Sopore’s Shahabad locality, Zareena Begum, 30, wife of Ali Mohammad Sheikh, along with her 7-year-old daughter, Kajal, was washing clothes on the banks of the river Jhelum when her daughter lost her balance andfell into the river. According to Mohammed Ramzan, Zareena’s elder son, the mother jumped into the river in order to save the child from drowning. Both, however, were washed away in the river, Ramzan said. At the time of the filing of this report, the bodies were yet to be retrieved even as a search was on. According to official sources, soon after the incident, teams of police and fisheries department reached the spot and began searching for the duo. Sub-District Magistrate Sopore, Dr Syed Mohammad Hanif, said that a search party was trying to locate the bodies. “We are on the spot, along with search parties from the police and fisheries department, trying to find the bodies,” he said. In a separate incident, a child drowned in to the river Jhelum near the Khushhal Mato area of Sopore town. Some passersby, however, jumped to the rescue. The baby, now safe, was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, bodies of the two boys who had drowned on Fridayin a dam in Kupwara while takinga bath were retrieved, police said on Saturday. Muzamil Ahmad Mir and Tariq Ahmad Mir had drowned in ‘Sarband’ (dam) in their Wadder Bala village in Handwara area, 75 kms from here, last evening, a police spokesman said. The bodies were recovered from the water this morning.sen news.
