Mother has what is called an aortic aneurysm. The entire aorta needs replaced. The bottom section has already dissected and it is amazing she is alive today. The first surgery will be on the 15th (Tuesday) at Emanuel. She will be in ICU for 3-4 days then on a cardiac recovery floor for another 5-6 days. They will be replacing the aorta with synthetic materials. She needs to recuperate from the first surgery prior to the lower half of the surgery being done. The initial surgery will be from the beginning of the aorta and including the aortic arch. The second surgery will be from that arch, all the way down to the kidneys. This is the section that has already dissected, and will be a rough surgery as well, but wont require a chest crack. PLEASE send positive energy and good thoughts. Going to be a tough one around here for a while.
