Motorcycles won’t be the only vehicles running on Saturday, October 19th. The Jacksonville Roadster Club is having a car run to the Princess Place Preserve in Palm Coast, FL. Following a narrated tour of the Lodge at Princess Place Preserve by George Hanns, the club will motor to Palm Coast’s European Village for lunch at Farley‘s Irish Pub. Princess Place Preserve is a 1,500-acre natural historic park located in northern Flagler County. Originally known as Cherokee Grove the park is the county’s oldest homestead and site of the first in-ground swimming pool in Florida. Located at the confluence of the Matanzas River and Pellicer Creek, Princess Place Preserve is a beautiful pinewood forest and saltwater estuary marsh where you can interact with nature. In 1791, the property was part of a land grant from the King of Spain to a Minorcan carpenter named Francisco Pellicer. What is significant, Pellicer’s land grant is the only Spanish land grant on the East Coast of Florida to remain wholly intact as originally granted. H. C. Sloggert acquired the land from Pellicer and planted it in orange groves – one of the first groves in Florida, thus the name Cherokee Grove. In 1886, New York sportsman and shipping magnate Henry Cutting acquired the land and constructed an Adirondack-style hunting lodge on the shores of the Matanzas River. Cutting is also credited with building the first in-ground swimming pool in Florida and the pool is fed by an artesian spring. Cherokee Grove became a popular stop for New England socialites and European Royalty. In 1892, Mr. Cutting met an untimely death boating near Cherokee Grove. In 1904, Cutting’s widow, Angela Cutting, married an exiled Russian prince. Because of Angela’s ties to Russian royalty, the area became known as “Princess Place. Flagler County purchased Princess Place in 1993. The staging area for the Princess Place Preserve car run on Saturday, October 19, is at the Dairy Queen and Hess Gasoline station (address is 10055 US Hwy 1 South, St. Augustine, FL for GPS devices) west side off I-95 at Exit 298. Please be at the staging area by 10:30AM. We will depart thereafter for a short drive into Flagler County and the Princess Place Preserve (2500 Princess Place Road, Palm Coast, FL for your GPS). My friend George Hanns (who as a Commissioner was instrumental in acquiring the Preserve) will give a narrated tour at 11:00am. Following the tour of the lodge and grounds, we will motor to Farley’s Irish Pub in the European Village at 101 Palm Harbor Parkway, Suite 132, Palm Coast for lunch. A frozen yogurt place is located in the Village so we can chase the Irish Food with some smooth cold sweetie.
