Move to monitor deep seas Luke Rawalai Saturday, July 27, 2013 THE Ministry of Fisheries and Forests will increase the number of its offshore personnel by 25 from next year in order to adequately monitor the deep seas and our exclusive economic zones. Speaking to personnel in the North during a recent visit, permanent secretary Inoke Wainiqolo said the offshore department had limited staffing and there was a need to beef up manpower. Mr Wainiqolo said the increase in manpower was to ensure illegal fishing within Fiji waters was minimised as this activity usually deprived coastal communities of fishery resources and revenues. "We have submitted our requests to Cabinet for the recruitment of an additional 25 personnel for the offshore department and this will be officially approved next year," he said. "According to world standards, we need to have a certain number of personnel to monitor fishing within our economic exclusive zones. "fijitimes/story.aspx?id=240892
