Movie Review: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag by me Every individual, whether a common or a great person, has his own story. But if its narration is not good and creative, then the story doesn’t appeal the listeners. But when there is a narrator like Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra and the story is of a legend Flying Sikh, then expectations are high. With a lot of courage and research, Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra has painted a beautiful three hours canvas depicting the grey shades of Indo-Pak participation and the making of the Legend Milkha Singh. People do know that Milkha Singh is a Gold Medal athlete but nobody was aware of his struggle to be The Milkha Singh. This film portrays this diamond, who life was darker than coal, and how much he had to suffer to shine. There are many sub-plots in Multan (now in Pakistan) shown in tinted colours, then his refugee life with his elder sister, his ways to be a ‘gulli ka gunda’, his first innocent love, his army training and coaching, and his struggle to be flying Sikh. All sub-plots are woven beautifully through creative editing. There are instances when you’ll laugh seeing Prakash Raj (the senior military official) in his Bengali accent, some one liner’s by Farhan and the scene where Farhan gets scared in the plane. But mostly there are scenes which will dampen your eyes; when you see Milkha’s passion for getting the Indian blazer from the champions, when his coach (Pavan Malhotra) says, “Aise 100 champions ko tu harayega”, when we see Milkha bloody separation from his motherland, and in the end his cry in front of his house in Pakistan, etc. Cinematography is top-notched as it captures every colour and every frame skillfully. Io, is back with a bang after a long time, but here they have no scope because songs seems to be forcefully included in the movie, it not only paces the movie down but also increases the length of the movie. But special mention of the song “Zinda” in the background, truly awesome. It can make your blood run faster. Performance-wise, everyone in the movie has given a top-notched performance. Farhan Akhtar’s efforts to portray Milkha Singh resulted as his best performance till date. He easily shows the wide range of emotion in order to go under the skin of the character. You can like him being innocent, aggressive, frustrated and violent. Pavan Malhotra has added one more feather in his cap. This guy has shown his tremendous ability of playing any given role. Divya Dutta, as usual, lightens up the screen with her acting skills. Don’t understand, how come our film industry missed her talents for so many years. But finally, it is the narration, direction and the editing which takes a front seat. Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra has proved himself best in telling a story. The only weakest link in the movie without which the movie could have been a milestone, is the love between Farhan and Sonam Kapoor. If reduced its length by cutting down the romance between two lovers, and songs, this is the best movie of 2013 so far. Run people Run to watch “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” ….
