Movie roundup time! Alright... two movies I watched not long ago. I can kinda recommend both of them. But you have to be in the mood for these kind of films. At least from my point of view. =) Rescue Dawn This is a movie that makes you feel like you need a shower after watching it. Its a Werner Herzog film and if youre familiar with his body of work then you know he loves the jungle, and it shows in this one. Its based on a true story about US Navy Pilot Dieter Dengler. In the early stages of the Vietnam war he was on a secret mission over Laos, when his plane got hit and crashed. Soon he gets captured and finds himself in a POW camp. There he meets prisoners that were captured a long time before him. Which suggests that there already was a lot backdoor stuff going on in that conflict, before it actually officially started. The prisoners start to plan their escape and eventually get a chance to break out. Dengler is portrayed by Christian Bale who, as usual, delivers a fantastic performance. We also have Jeremy Davies and Steve Zahn as two of the other prisoners. Jeremy Davies is always a great thing to have but what really blew me away was the performance by Steve Zahn, given the stuff we usually see him in. He was really really good. Herzog seemed to be able to push the cast. Especially since Herzog is famous for his on location filming. Except for a few scenes everything in this movie was filmed in the jungle. Everything included. Rain, mud, heat... everything. You feel the exhaustion of these characters so bad it almost hurts. Its a fantastic survival movie you should give a shot if you can catch it somewhere. My Week With Marilyn I had this one on my radar for a while now. Now that Ive seen it I must say its pretty much what I expected. A nice glimpse at this largerthan life character that was Marilyn Monroe. The acting throughout the movie is very good. Especially Michelle Williams and Eddie Redmayne have some good chemistry. Both actors are able to portray a character and situations with face expressions alone and thats what I call art. Even if the film only shows a small period of time in the life of Marilyn they manage to show what a conflicted person she probably was. It really must have been a treat and curse to work with her. And the movie does show that really well through Kenneth Branaghs character. So ultimately its a fine piece of film with some really well done cinematography that I can recommend if youre in any shapre or form interested in Marilyn Monroe.
