•Moyes? Sir Alex Ferguson was a manager unparalleled when it came to bringing trophies to whichever football club he managed. His 26 years at Manchester United saw 13 Premier League titles, half of the seasons he was in charge, but it is important not to forget hed already proven himself a great success north of the border with Aberdeen. Its a legacy peppered with outstanding pieces of transfer business. Steve Bruce, Peter Schmeichel, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Ole Gunnar Solskjaear, all brought the club to the very top of English football, while the signings of players such as Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra helped keep them there. But there was always the odd market failure, who can forget Massimo Taibi and Eric Djemba-Dejemba failing so emphatically, or the poor choice of players like Juan Veron and Kleberson for the Premier League. •In recent years there had been fewer inspired signings, Javier Herandez perhaps being the last. Of the clubs best deals of the last year or two, Robin van Persie was already the leagues best striker, while David de Gea was already the best young goalkeeper in the world. A whole host of others have flattered to deceive or failed to prove particular value for money. •And in David Moyes, the very last arrival attributable to Ferguson has proved to be his most spectacular failure. In May, as the club celebrated his career in his last home game, the Scot urged fans and all associated with the club to persevere with their new boss, admitting: I’d also like to remind you that we’ve had bad times here. The club stood by me. All my staff stood by me. The players stood by me. So your job now is to stand by our new manager. It is hugely damning for the club legend that no one listening that day has managed to last a season before ignoring his plea. Fergusons insistence on picking Moyes, and appeal to give the former Everton man time, look like arguably his biggest ever mistake. Moyes just wasnt able to seize control at such a huge football club, and often looked out of his depth with the expectations and characters there. It was a huge mistake to do away with the clubs outstanding back room staff, something Ferguson surely wouldnt have supported, and a disastrous summer transfer window failed to address the problems that had come to light as they won the title. The fact Ferguson played such a hands on role in bringing Moyes to Old Trafford will ensure that if those at the club are looking for people to blame for the fiasco that was Moyes reign, the man with a side of the stadium named after him is as guilty as anyone. That stain on his reputation and career, and on his beloved Manchester United, will be hard to take...Rsis finest........
