Mr Akanat accused a pro-government mob of carrying out the attack which killed Suthin Tharathin - a leader of the Dharma Army, a Buddhist organisation which has been prominent in the demos. He was shot dead while he gave a speech from the back of pick-up truck in a Bangkok suburb. Many polling stations across Bangkok, and in southern provinces that are opposition strongholds, remained shut after protesters surrounded them and chained gates, preventing voters from entering. At some stations voters were violently pushed away. Outside others protesters danced and sang patriotic songs after election officials announced the stations would not open.
