Mr. Eric Garner is dead. Nothing will bring him back. It is his beloved wife and family who need our prayers and support now. The question is how do we prevent this from happening again. I have grown old watching this scenario play itself out over and over again, year after year. The problem is that the NYPD is a department that lacks diversity and in no way reflects the demographics of this City. Unless we have a residency requirement for all City employees we will continue to see wild, rogue cops from out of town act as an occupying force, instead a professional department. Every effort to legislate residency requirements has been struck down with unusual swiftness by our State Legislature. I call on every so called black leader, Sharpton, Jackson and Farakhan to forego marching and headline grabbing and instead pressure the New York State Legislature to change the law and make our police department look like the people they police. If this predominately white force really wants to protect and serve then go home and protect and serve where you live. I call on every black and latino elected official from Letitia James, who holds the most worthless position in government to Gregory W. Meeks, our feckless Congressman from southeast Queens to get busy or resign. WE DEMAND AN IMMEDIATE CHANGE TO THE RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT.
