Bangladesh) is a Ph.D. fellow of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan, who studies at Graduate School of Yokohama City University (YCU, Yokohama, Japan) under the supervision of Prof. Yasuhiro Ozeki. He won a “Travel Grant Award” from the International Glycoconjugates Organization (IGO) at 22nd International Glycoconjugates Symposium (GLYCO22, 23-28th June, 2013 Dalian, China). HASAN: I am receiving Monbukagakusho scholarship from MEXT, Japan for PhD program and came to Yokohama in October, 2012. It was my first experience to attend any international symposium and there I presented distinct cell regulatory mechanisms of novel α-galactoside-binding lectins from aquatic animals that can recognize a particular glycan, Gb3 through the lectin-glycan interactions. OZEKI: Mr. Hasan is the 4th PhD student and the 2nd foreign student in my laboratory. He is also serving as an assistant professor in Rajshahi University which is one of the major public universities in Bangladesh. Besides research, he vigorously and frankly discusses about many global issues like culture, history, religion and sports with lab-members. May be he was influenced by his father, Hasan Azizul Huq, who is a renowned writer focusing on the life and social interactions of common people in Bangladesh. I think, any supervisor will struggle to develop the quality of education for such type of students. “I am more interested to learn the philosophy of scientific research, not only the techniques.” HASAN: To become a student at the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, more than 2000 students compete with each other for only 45 seats, it is quite amazing! In this department, medium of instruction is English and durations of written examinations are 3, sometimes 4 hours. After their graduation, students have enough theoretical knowledge and applying that, try to learn many research techniques when they go abroad. But the teaching method in my new laboratory is a bit different. Professor Ozeki does not emphasize on theory-based knowledge, however he expects me to become more flexible and innovative to handle the research context smartly. It was not easy for us to adopt this style but participating in the international conference helped me to understand and justify his philosophy of scientific research. Globalization of higher study is important ! HASAN: When I participated in the international symposium, I tried to acquire knowledge on each topic of the poster to explain it briefly to a number of top-level glycobiologists from different parts of the world. My supervisor helped me to practice it several times in Japan. I also learned a lot from the global-standard presentations delivered in the symposium. Bangladesh is an emerging country with huge potential but lagging behind due to political instability. Studying global-standard scientific research in Japan, we, the Bangladeshi students are optimistic to apply this knowledge and mental for the betterment of our country hopr educational standard. I hope to enjoy the upcoming days in Japan with my research group. The 22nd International Glycoconjugates Symposium Glycan-mediated cytotoxicity of human lymphoma cells was induced by a lectin purified from the Mediterranean mussel with a highly novel primary structure.
