Mr Montclair here is the renowned abolitionist enforcer , slash persecutor. It sure is an honor to have two legends in my house.Cynthia get these gentleman some Jasmine tea and cook them up some hog meat , and none of those turnips and collards yall fat Negras eat. .The three men were laughing heartily at the expense of Miss Cynthia, embarrassing me to the point that I wanted to shoot all three men with my three remaining bullets. Plantation owners tended to eat lots of meat; meat was expensive and thus became a symbol of wealth, which was very ironic and occurred to me that Miss Cynthia s diet was probably tastier if not healthier than his , proving him foolish .The house slaves had a slightly higher standard of living and might have had additional food choices and perhaps greater quantity. For this reason black house slaves considered themselves to be highly superior to those who picked cotton and worked the fields.Miss Cynthia seemed to epitomize the complete antithesis of that. I didnt feel any arrogance or foolish pride coming ftom her and it bothered me that she was being disrespected in front of my daughters .Ive stringently taught that men treat women with respect.Theyve never witnessed such meanspirited disregard for a human being let alone a woman .My girls just stood watching these tarred soul men cackling , eyes glistening in an amazed naiveté. While my sister oddly dusted the piano and the portraits of the evil confederate generals .The laughing ceased and the attention was back to me .Mr Montclair began asking me questions. Well sir what brings you around these parts besides visiting your handsome brother in law? .I immediately wondered why he would have addressed James as handsome but responded in jest Well sir if you must know , I had to meet a former colleague of mine from Franklin College. Raising his eyebrow in a confused manner. Franklin college? Franklin college he repeats? Looking more baffled by the second .Yes in University Town in Athens .Oh I know what and where it is son .Im on the board of trustees there and have been for many a years. He cockily mumbled on .Yes son, that great institution was established in 1785 and still going strong.Di you know the school motto son? It seemed as if was testing me , thinking to myself that I was about to embarrass him intentionally. I began my little soliloquy .Yes sir it definitely is a splendid and universally magnanimous university .I ve learned very much from that institution and made the university motto my essential and immediate responsibility to represent my university in the most exemplary distinct manner possible. First sir, Ill give you our motto in Latin .I confidently spoke : Et docere et rerum exquirere causas meaning , to teach and to inquire into the nature of things. To serve has been anachronistically added sir , so the English motto now reads To teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things yes I can recite the motto sir , in Latin and English sir.His face immediately soured , apparently annoyed and taken aback by acumen and arrogant pretentiousness. To be cont. .Ant
