Mr. Pink, Oprah, TED, CNN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D HELLO VISIONARIES! :D HELLO INTRINSIC MOTIVATION! :D HELLO AUTONOMY! :D HELLO MASTERY! :D HELLO PURPOSE! :D HELLO LIFE! :D HELLO LEGACY! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D BRAVO!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D **************************************** Who wins? Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose or Carrots and Sticks? The former -- Intrinsic Characteristics -- of course. Theres a mismatch between what science knows and what business does: (1) 20th century Carrot and Sticks approach work but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances (yep, rats go after the reward at the expense of ignoring the peripheral – the bigger picture) (2) If-Then rewards often destroy creativity (3) The secret to high performance isn’t rewards and punishment but that unseen intrinsic drive – the drive to do things for their own sake, the drive to do things because they matter. Science confirms what we know in our hearts. If we bring our notions of motivation into the 21st century, if we get past this dangerously lazy ideology of carrots and sticks: (1) We can strengthen our businesses (2) (Our work will matter – aspiring toward higher purposes :D ) (3) and maybe maybe maybe … we can change our world.
