Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose or Carrots and Sticks? The former -- Intrinsic Characteristics -- of course. Theres a mismatch between what science knows and what business does: (1) 20th century Carrot and Sticks approach work but only in a surprisingly narrow band of circumstances (yep, rats go after the reward at the expense of ignoring the peripheral – the bigger picture) (2) If-Then rewards often destroy creativity (3) The secret to high performance isn’t rewards and punishment but that unseen intrinsic drive – the drive to do things for their own sake, the drive to do things because they matter. Science confirms what we know in our hearts.
