Mr. Rohan Mukherjee has presented the Supreme Courts judgment in proper perspective. While the right to reject the candidates has been upheld, it seems to be only of academic importance. The effect of such rejection will only be next to nothing. The political parties have obvious reasons for giving candidature to wrong persons and they know it all. They are not going to be very sensitive about subtle indications of the voters, which would not have any effect in winning or losing the elections. The political parties are particular only about winning MLA or MP seats. What if voters waste their votes in a glorified manner? If majority of the voters reject all the candidates, they should be barred at least for 15 years and there should be reelection. If this happens in the reelection also, the political parties should be disqualified from participating in the election process, at least in the constituency concerned. Unless there is some sort of compulsion, the political parties would not show any interest in improving the standard of democracy. The directive of the Supreme Court is no doubt a positive step but there seems to be a long way to go.
