Mrs Hopkins... God bless her soul... was in her 70s in the late 1970s a widow who lived in the flat upstairs... above us and across the road from her son, a doctor & family at the foothills of Thornton just outside Wellington a fan of our toddler son, Joel ! our ham & vegetable soup today for lunch jogged my memory of her a kindly, ole lady who would cook her pea & ham soup for me when I have flu and my nasty cough ! maybe the coughing kept her up at night ? she was an alert, knowledgeable & witty ole lady a great sense of humour, sociable & chatty... she never failed to poke her head out the window to cheer me on whenever I did the mowing on our shared little patch of lawn downstairs cause it was often overdue and getting unruly ! one day, we fumigated our flat... she almost fainted when she saw some cockcroaches fleeing our unit ! Phil my friend who worked with NZ Gas who gave me the insecticide he was also a fellow partime barman with me at the pub ~ we ended up in stitches ! sometimes, Id bring a bottle of white wine upstairs to share with Mrs Hopkins ! whod never say no ! wed have a lively yarn and polish the bottle off leisurely... those were good the ole days my friend... https://youtube/watch?v=2KODZtjOIPg which is incidentally by another Hopkins...
