Mrs. Silberg observed my dilemma quietly. I had grown to love her, and here’s why: my success was her goal. A great teacher understands that her distinction builds indirectly, a byproduct of her students’ achievements. I studied Mrs. Silberg’s face as she talked to me of breath streams, pure vowel sounds, and placement. The fragile skin around her eyes only thinly covered the tiny blue vessels networked underneath, lending a sorrowful, lav- ender hue to her countenance. She once spoke to me of tragedy in her life, and her eyes filled with tears. She wasn’t accustomed to confession, and I struggled to intuit her meaning. It was as though she desired to express a fathomless emotion without really telling the tale. It would be years before I knew her full story. - from The Song of Annie Moses
