Mukta Hasta Shirshasana translates to, free hand head pose aka headstand. In the Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana-nerve cleansing) of The Ashtanga Yoga Method, a sequence of seven headstands arrive as the last postures in the series. Here you will see the first three of the seven. The purpose is to stack, realign, and neutralize the vertebrae after completion of the demanding second series postures which require deep backbending, radical hip opening, extreme forward folding, etc. These headstands notoriously nicknamed The Seven Deadlies. If youve ever gotten to this point in the series you will understand firsthand! Not only are these postures challenging, but they are VERY dangerous if not performed with a solid foundation in the shoulders and engagement of the core. In fact, when I first learned them, I immediately threw out my neck which prevented me from practice for over a week. I still have a lot of work to do to become absolutely steady-but with mindful practice all is coming.
