Mum question:Ive just found out Im pregnant with our 2nd child. Our daughter is 15 months old & will be 23 months when baby arrives in Aug. Im worried about how Ill manage feeding a newborn overnight especially as I co-sleep with my daughter including her day naps...she sleeps latched onto the breast and wont sleep any other way. (Hubby sleeps in another room as no room for all of us). Having a newborn in my room will wake my daughter, & I can barely go to the toilet overnight without waking her when I get up. I would love for my daughter to be able to sleep in her cot but I dont see how this will be possible without sleep training, which I am trying to avoid. I hear there is a gentle sleep school in Melb but I still worry this could be damaging? My daughter is quite a high needs baby & wont accept a pacifier or bottle & wont settle without me. She also wakes every hour or so through the night and will only resettle with the breast. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Pinky says: Please dont worry - there is a big difference in development between 15 months and 23 months. Think how much your baby has developed in the last 8 months. Right now needs can be quite intense but once those molars and canines are through, shes able to walk and is talking , things get a lot easier. Rather than a cot, in a couple of months or sooner if you like (often around 18 months once molars are through, its fairly easy) you can start transitioning her to a mattress on the floor - settle her there, then move away from her. This will distance your little one from the breast and chances are she will start to sleep longer. for now, it would be helpful to try and work out why she is waking so often - e.g. teeth? tummy discomfort? Food intolerance? Low iron levels? Address this and it will help her sleep better.
