Mum question:My baby boy is 3 months 2 days old today. He is fully breast fed. His weight today was 5500g at his weigh in. He put on 75g this week, 170g the last. Is this normal? The midwives where I take him to get weighed are making me feel like a failure and are very critical. I want to keep breast feeding as I love the bond but I dont want to compromise my baby. It kills me that I feel like I cant give him everything he needs. Pinky says: Thats really demoralising to be criticised. Are they offering any helpful suggestions? Asking how many feeds he is having? how many wet and dirty nappies? How active is he? Has he had a cold or been distracted while feeding the past week? What size are you and his father? Does he have a dummy or suck his fingers? There are no calories in a dummy so if he is doing this, try popping him on the boob each time he sucks his fingers. Is he having night feeds? Had he done a poo a short time before he was weighed this week ? What was his birth weight? Have they added up his weight gains over a month (this could even the total out). Have you plotted his weight on the WHO child growth charts - is he following a percentile , if so he is probably OK. You really need to have all the right questions asked and then any tweaking that needs to happen can be advised. You are doing well to be fully breastfeeding and by the looks of his chubby cheeks, it sounds as though you will be able to make any changes you need to keep fully breastfeeding. This stress and discouragement isnt helpful. Why not speak to a breastfeeding counsellor or lactation consultant who will be able to reassure you and make suggestions if you need to change anything around your babys feeds. Please relax - you are giving your baby everything he needs - your milk and your love!
