“ Muna Madan” Synopsis:- Muna Madan is a short epic narrative by the poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota, is one of the most popular works in the Nepali Literature. Just before his death in 1959 he made his famous statement “It would be all right if all my works were burned, except for Muna Madan” Muna and Madan are a husband and wife who live in Kathmand finacially not well of, Madan find to work in Tibet. After thousands of words of discouragement from his wife Muna, Madan sets out for Tibet, promising to be back home after only few weeks in Lhasa, having earned enough to stave off poverty. Once in Lhasa, Madan becomes entranced by the city’s beauty. Suddenly, however, he suffers reservations and hurriedly starts for home. On the way back the falls sick left to struggle for himself by his own friends on the way, he fortunatly is rescued by a Tibetan, who treats him and brings him back to life. In return for his services Madan offers him a purse of gold which the Tibetan refuse, saying that gold is of no value in comparison to humanity Muna waits desperately for Madan but loses hope for his return. A rascally would be suit of becomes entrances by Muna’s beauty and tells her that her husband has passed away when Madan does come back home he finds that his mother and wife have passed away. The bags of gold he brought from Tibet are of no use to him now that he cannot find his beloved ones. He decides that he cannot endure without his beloved ones and follows them. It describes the life of a man who leaves his wife and goes abroad to make money and while returning he becomes sick on the way. His friends leave him on the road and come back home saying he died on the way. It also shows the life of a poor woman who suffered much without her husband and latter die because of grief. When Madan returns back after being healthy. He discovers that his dear wife is dead and comes realize that money is of no use value at that point. In this poem Laxmi Prasad Writes that greatness is not measured by one’s race and caste but by their deed. The book was later adopted into a movie directed by Gyanendra Deuja. The movie had National Award Nominated actress Usha Paudel in her debut role Muna. The movie had been the official representation of Nepal in 2005 Academy Awards.
