Mundanes. Im going to post about something here that to me, is a term I dont use. I hear it being used more and more. It is used often in subcultures. Ive worried a lot about posting my feelings on this. But Im going to anyway. Here are three definitions of it. - Lacking interest or imagination: dull. - Mundanes are people with normal jobs and normal boring lives who watch boring television and have boring tastes in music and the arts. - In subcultural and fictional uses, a mundane is a person who does not belong to a particular group, according to the members of that group; the implication is that such persons, lacking imagination, are concerned solely with the mundane: the quotidian and ordinary.[1] The term first came into use in science fiction fandom to refer, sometimes deprecatingly, to non-fans; this use of the term antedates 1955. I see a lot of people who dress in civvies or normal clothing referred to as Mundanes. Im sorry, but I will not use this term. You are welcome to use it of course, but I cant. There is nothing at all wrong with being dressing in normal clothing, just as there is nothing at all wrong with being part of a subculture. Whether that be steampunk, cosplay, or Larping. As a part of both the gothic and steampunk subculture Ive been hassled and the way I dress put down. I personally love the way I dress. Im nor going to change for anyone but me. A lot of people find their way into steampunk because they have felt marginalized. I personally find the term a little bit condescending. Some terms you will find in a thesaurus related to mundane are vapid, boring, banal, stale, stupid, and boring. I think its a derogatory term. Ive even heard people apologizing for dressing in Mundanes. Dont. You are allowed a life outside steampunk. We all have to have jobs. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to dress the way we want for our job. But we all have bills to pay. You can dress any way you wish, and if you like it, and are comfortable, who is anyone to say you are mundane? Or put you into any box? You are you. Clothing is fabulous and well and good. But its the person inside that counts in the end, surely?
