Mungo NP, NSW. Site of remains of 42,000 year old ritual burials. These are some of the oldest remains of modern humans (Homo sapiens) yet found outside of Africa. Mungo Lady is the oldest known cremation in the world, perhaps the most important human remains ever found in Australia. The discovery re-wrote the ancient story of this land and its people and sent shock-waves around the world. The geography of this place (an ancient lake) lent itself to the preservation of these artefacts and constructs today what is a fascinating and intriguing landscape. A world heritage site and one of my favourite places. Middle: distant shot of the lunette at Lkae Mungo and last is an example of the Walls of China sand erosion on the lunette. To approach the formations visitors must be in the company of a registered guide.
