Muscatine High is not providing an Autistic child with the help - TopicsExpress

Muscatine High is not providing an Autistic child with the help that is needed to make her be successful. The IEP and everything else is so vague and changes with who ever reads it. For 6 years we have been asking for the autism team to be involved, 2 years ago the school physiatrist said she was not autistic even though the University of Iowa and several private mental health teams and doctors have diagnosed her. We once again are struggling in school, the student needs to show more responsibility however the school needs to do a lot more. This student receives state aid cause the state says she is autistic also so there should be no excuses for not having funds or abilities to help her. She does not understand her work and struggles with asking for help as she feels she is looked down on or made to feel stupid. When the parents ask for help the answer that they receive is push back that it is ALL the students fault. This young lady is not allowed to do elective classes as she has 3 math classes and quote from a high school faculty member a very militants style enrichment hour (study hall) instead of lunch. The best years of her life as people so say are becoming her most miserable failing time that will stick with her for the rest of her life and she will not ever be able to do the fun things or the things that interest her because of her not getting needed help. she is just a thorn in the systems side that her team just pushes off and tries to forget. She is missing from classes, found wondering, she is failing, and no one appears to care. The parents can not go to school and walk her from class to class, they can not do her homework for her, and they cant come in for meetings at the teachers convince as in 8 am or 2pm as the parents work and can not afford to leave work. As they need to provide for the family. Meetings can be scheduled after 3 (schools out at 3:30 do it after school not before) and both parents can be there. However since the parents cant be there at the times suggested the parents are considered not cooperating. This is my daughter, she needs one on one, she needs people to be calm and nice, she needs to have the same opportunities as the other students. She should have the option to take an art or ag class, maybe she might just excel at them when given the opportunity. I know the school system is plagued with problems but does do a lot of great things, Iam by no means trying to take away from those things however WE NEED HELP! Does anyone have any advice or know of any legal services or advocates that could help us and force MHS to give my daughter the services needed to make her successful? As parents we can only do so much. We try and help with school work, provide her with counseling, and provide her with services though LSI (very good group of people) along with mental health services from the university of Iowa and Vera French. We have and are doing all we can as parents, we are at our ropes end and dont know were to turn now. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
