Music, Dance , Beach Festivals & Crafts Mela of Orissa During the cooler winter months, Orissa comes alive with festivals devoted to traditional music and dance. The state is home to Odissi, one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It also has many forms of folk and tribal dances. Attend these popular Orissa festivals to witness mesmerizing music and dance performances, held amongst some of Orissas most well known temples. Konark Festival The official Konark Festival, organized by Orissa Tourism, features a range of classical Odissi, Bharathnatyam, Manipuri, Kathak and Chau dance performances. Added attractions are an exhibition of Orissan temple sculptures, sand art exhibition, and crafts fair. • Where: Open air auditorium, Natamandir, near the Konark Temple. • When: December 1-5 each year. Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav The Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav is hosted by the Odisha Dance Academy (ODA) and Art Vision. It combines martial dance, which celebrates the victory of peace over war, with classical and folk dances of the state. The festivals location is evocative. Its held in the hills alongside the historic Daya River, at the place where Emperor Ashok is believed to have fought the last battle of the Kalinga war before surrendering the sword and embracing Buddhism. • Where: Shanti Stupa/Peace Pagoda, Dhauli Hill, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. • When: February 15-17, 2014. Mukteshwar Dance Festival The Mukteshwar Dance Festival, which concentrates on Odissi dance and music, offers solo, duet and group Odissi performances. This year, a number of reputed troupes from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, and the US will perform at the festival. It takes place in the courtyard of one of Bhubaneswars most prominent and well-preserved temple complexes. • Where: Mukteshwar Temple Complex, Bhubaneswar. • When: January 14-16, 2014. Rajarani Music Festival Entrancing performances by well-known Odissi and Hindustani vocal and music maestros bring alive the architectural beauty of the Rajarani temple at this festival. The temple, often referred to as the Khajuraho of the east, is famous for its elaborate erotic sculptured figurines. • Where: Rajarani Temple, Bhubaneswar. • When: January 18-20, 2014. Toshali National Crafts Mela: Toshali National Crafts Mela is the 12-day long fair, attract more than 200 craftsmen from different parts of the country showcasing their pristine handicraft and handloom products. Besides, food courts and cultural shows will be major attractions of the fair. The fair serves as a meeting ground for artists, painters, weavers, sculptors and craftsmen from all over India. “The fair is quite popular among the city denizens as we get to buy variety of products from all over the country. • Where: Bhubaneswar. • When: 15th – 27th December, 2014. International Puri Beach Festival: Being a festival of various classical and folk dances of India, the festival is also marked by an exhibition of Handicrafts, Handloom and Sand Art. To add more fun to the festival, events like fashion shows and rock shows are also made a part of it that leaves every present soul extremely happy and delighted. Apart from this the other attractions are important exhibition, food stalls, beach sports, special boat race among local fisherman, sand art show, helium balloon ride, kite fly show, camel ride & horse ride on the beach, meena bazaar & merry go—round, bhagawat katha discourse will be part of the festival. • Where:Puri Sea Beach. • When: 23rd to 29th November, 2014. Gopalpur Beach Festival: The five-day festival, which showcased the rich cultural heritage of Ganjam district, had the crashing waves of the scenic Gopalpur beach as its backdrop. In this one of the attractions is the Bollywood singers dished out some of their biggest hits. There was also a collage of folk dances, including jodi sankha, ranapa dance, animal mask dance and ghanta mrudunga by artistes of Berhampur, Gopalpur and Chhatrapur.
