Music Review #15 The Aquabats! This is a band that sometimes cheers me up or helps me to take things less seriously. A buddy I had in high-school liked them... I didnt catch on till a few years back... Anyways... Theyre a ska band. Ska is like taking rock and roll and mixing in brass instruments with reggae undertones. Heres where they stick out though... Theyre superheroes! They have uniforms. Each band member has their own powers and stories. Seeing their live shows... (Which unfortunately, I havent...) Is like seeing a silly play. They have enemies come out and confront them. Its a very fun concept. Their musical content reflects the wackiness exhibited in their shows. A lot of what they refer to in the lyrics are reminiscent of childhood. Stuff like... When I was a little man Playdough came in a little can I was Star Wars biggest fan Now Im stuck without a plan Gi Joe was an action man Shaggy drove the mystery van Devo was my favorite band Take me back to my happy land The moods they project arent meant to be taken seriously. If anything, it seems like theyre meant to do the opposite and help the listener to realize that taking everything so seriously could be hazardous. I dont know about you but I require reminders like that pretty often. They seem to have a lot of fun. If you can do what you love, have fun and support yourself from doing so... then you are a superhero in my book. Honestly, this group has helped me through some crappy times by giving me something warm-hearted to focus on. They even created their own cartoon, The Aquabats Supershow!. Its pretty awesome. The show makes me feel like I know them. In the comments Im going to post some links to songs you should give a chance. Whenever youre looking for new music remember this... A bad band can have a good song and a good band can have a bad song. Good and bad are relative. everybody has their own personal good or bad...
