Music through Gestural - TopicsExpress

Music through Gestural Space. https://youtube/watch?v=BeaYw1iIeZU I confess I listened & watched for 54 minutes--Ill return to it tomorrow because I need to rest my brain from the overload! I learned a lot about gestures transforming space and even some deep mathematics. Quote of the day: understanding is catching a gesture and extending it. Gestures as pre-semiotic are the morphisms that allow us to see an object from so many different points of view that we dont even need the object! He calls this functorality or functors. But really, he is talking about Yonedas Lemma, the first non-trivial result from Category Theory. I have to say his computer generated musical examples are irritating, because they are exactly the variations of music that are not musical! For what is non-music but noise? Im a bit surprised the good professor does not make such a distinction--it is in the thermodynamics, but I guess because hes anchored to the symmetries and his jazz is a variation off that line. If this is all category theory can do for music (topological reversals and orbits), then Im a bit disappointed. Still, what the good professor has built is impressive.
