Musical TV will unexpectedly be at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham this afternoon for the matinee performance of Top Hat. David is climbing to the heights of the Balcony for this as the Theatre is pretty fully booked for what is a brilliant show according to those who have seen it. He will be reporting live from the Theatre from 2.15pm and through the afternoon. To wet your appetite, and his, below is the famous Top Hat routine from the film with Fred Astaire. Top Hat the Musical is a 2011 stage musical based on the 1935 film of the same name, featuring music and lyrics by Irving Berlin with additional orchestration by Chris Walker. The show opened on 16 August 2011 at the Milton Keynes Theatre, touring the United Kingdom before transferring to the Aldwych Theatre in Londons West End. Top Hat won multiple 2013 Laurence Olivier Awards after receiving seven nominations. Stepping into the shoes of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the lead roles of Jerry Travers and Dale Tremont, are Alan Burkitt and Charlotte Gooch, who both return to Top Hat having previously performed these roles in the West End. They are joined by Clive Hayward who returns as Horace Hardwick, the role he played in the West End, Rebecca Thornhill asMadge Hardwick, Sebastien Torkia as Alberto Beddini and John Conroy as Horaces valet Bates. Packed full of Irving Berlins greatest hits including, Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie & Tails, Lets Face the Music & Dance and Puttin on the Ritz, Top Hat tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers who dances his way across Europe to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont. An uplifting and hilarious romantic comedy celebrating 1930s song, style and romance, Top Hat dazzles with over 200 beautiful costumes, breathtaking dance and a love story that will set the pulse racing!
