It was released in October 1999 as the first single and title track from her album of the same name. Breathe became Hills 7th number one on the country music charts in the US. The song spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Country charts in December 1999 and January 2000. It also peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2000, having been blocked by Maria Maria by Santana featuring The Product G&B and Try Again by Aaliyah.
