Muslim immigrants in a town near Copenhagen have forced the cancellation of traditional Christmas displays this year even while spending lavishly on the Islamic Eid celebration marking the end of Ramadan. The controversy has escalated into an angry nationwide debate over the role of Islam in post-Christian Denmark, where a burgeoning Muslim population is becoming increasingly assertive in imposing its will on a wide range of social and civic issues. Apparently, a significant number of Australians are concerned about the sequestration of muslims in the community. The Roy Morgan poll has published the results of a survey done in Australia and found 70 per cent of those questioned believe Australia is not a better place because of Islam. The survey, completed in late October, found 50 per cent of those questioned also wanted full face coverings banned from public spaces. A 2004 report from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission showed that many Muslim Australians felt the Australian media was unfairly critical of, and often vilified their community due to generalisations of terrorism and the emphasis on crime. However, when statistically, Muslim immigrants are five times more likely to commit crimes than Australians, and terrorist acts are almost never committed by non-muslims, I think the muslim community needs to own the problem instead of denying it. Nobody can fix a problem until they admit it, and this constant denial that there is something wrong in the muslim community becomes irritating for Australlians, hence the Roy Morgan poll results. Accept there is a problem, and then things can be done about it. Australians dont discriminate to the extent they have with muslims as evidenced by the many many cultures that have come to Australia, decided not to bite the hand that fed them, and thrived. This muslim issue is not present just here in Australia - it is prevalent in ALL Western secular communities in which muslims have settled. What to do? Not sure, but again, if they could just focus on what they do well and leave behind them their own failed political, religious and social systems, then maybe they could get on with living in harmony with other people.
